Liberty: The Ships That Won the War

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Elphick, Peter, PUBLISHER: US Naval Institute Press, This stirring tribute tells the complete story of the renowned Liberty ships, from their design concept and production through their war service and post war careers. Designed for speed and ease of production, Liberty ships were turned out at American shipyards so rapidly that the Allies were able to replace thousands of ships lost to U-boats and keep the vital transatlantic supply routes open. Filled with firsthand accounts, the book brings to life the amazing industrial effort and sacrifice and heroism of the men who sailed the ships in every theater of the war. The construction of the Robert E. Perry in a record-breaking five days and ongoing efforts to preserve the last surviving ships are just two of the many stories illuminating this overlooked part of World War II. Essential reading for historians and naval enthusiasts, this book is a fascinating account of one of the great achievements in maritime history.

The Great War and the Remaking of Global Order The Deluge The Great War and the Remaking of Global Order As I was a big fan of Tooze's The Wages of Destruction, I was really looking forward to this book. In it, Tooze advances the thesis that Woodrow Wilson and, to a lesser extent, his successors were attempting to exert a form of global financial hegemony during the latter half of WW1 as the Entente became reliant on American loans. I can't help but feel that the author bit off more than he could chew-even 500 pages isn't enough space to cover global economic and political development over such a tumultuous 15 year time period, and he often makes assertions that he doesn't have enough time or space to fully explore or explain-perhaps he should have focused more on the American-European relationship and left Asia for a follow-on work. Tooze is at his best when discussing socio-political events, but makes some a few military history errors-he refers to the Imperial German Navy as the Kriegsmarine, a name it wouldn't adopt until the coming of the Third Reich, and classifies the Japanese battleship Mutsu as a cruiser-the later is important because of the Mutsu's role as a symbol of national pride as ship partially paid for by the donations of school kids. I still highly recommend reading it. _ *\_ A brilliant book - it has radically changed my understanding of... A brilliant book - it has radically changed my understanding of the Great War and the peace. He presents a radical reinterpretation of the peace, Wilson and Brest Litovsk. Oceanic - opens a whole new world of thinking about the problem. Amazing, Can't think of a better book that I have read in years. _ *\_ A searing and highly original analysis of the First World War and its anguished aftermath In the depths of the Great War, with millions dead and no imaginable end to the conflict, societies around the world began to buckle. The heart of the financial system shifted from London to New York. The infinite demands for men and materiel reached into countries far from the front. The strain of the war ravaged all economic and political assumptions, bringing unheard-of changes in the social and industrial order. A century after the outbreak of fighting, Adam Tooze revisits this seismic moment in history, challenging the existing narrative of the war, its peace, and its aftereffects. From the day the United States enters the war in to the precipice of global financial ruin, Tooze delineates the world remade by American economic and military power. Tracing the ways in which countries came to terms with America's centrality?including the slide into fascism? The Deluge is a chilling work of great originality that will fundamentally change how we view the legacy of World War I. The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle

The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Burgess, Jonathan S., PUBLISHER: Johns Hopkins University Press, Although the Iliad and Odyssey narrate only relatively small portions of the Trojan War and its aftermath, for centuries these works have overshadowed other, more comprehensive narratives of the conflict, particularly the poems known as the Epic Cycle. In The Tradition of the Trojan War in Homer and the Epic Cycle, Jonathan Burgess challenges Homer's authority on the war's history and the legends surrounding it, placing the Iliad and Odyssey in the larger, often overlooked context of the entire body of Greek epic poetry of the Archaic Age. He traces the development and transmission of the Cyclic poems in ancient Greek culture, comparing them to later Homeric poems and finding that they were far more influential than has previously been thought.

Lost on the Ocean Floor: Diving the World's Ghost Ships

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Fine, John Christopher, PUBLISHER: US Naval Institute Press, Award-winning photojournalist-scuba diver John C. Fine has explored and documented the sunken fleets of the world--from Scapa Flow to Truk Lagoon--for most of his adult life, and the best of his discoveries are brought to life in this book. With his own haunting photographs to help him, Fine describes the sunken ships and the stories behind them, relating the circumstances of losing, and in some cases salvaging and preserving, ships dating from early Roman colonialization to modern times. It is a book that captures the drama of discovery and backs up the adventure with historical, scientific, and archaeological facts. Where possible, eyewitness accounts to the sinkings are included along with the folklore associated with some of the great salvage attempts and occasional accounts by people who have found great treasure on shipwrecks. The result of years of research and underwater exploration and filming, the book will capture the imagination of everyone with an interest in maritime history and armchair adventurers who dream of sunken warships and treasure-laden galleons long lost on the ocean floor.

Eisenhower and Churchill: The Partnership That Saved the

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Humes, James C. / Eisenhower, David, PUBLISHER: Prima Lifestyles, Although born and raised more than an ocean apart, Dwight Eisenhower and Winston Churchill--the two titans of the greatest generation--led remarkably parallel lives whose paths would intersect during history's most harrowing days. Through their youth, education, and military training, both men experienced similar triumphs and failures that shaped their lives, though they met only for the first time upon the eve of war in . "Eisenhower and Churchill" tells the magnificent story of these two great leaders and their exemplary partnership in war and peace. Through enlivened pages and fascinating anecdotes, author James C. Humes illuminates the human side of each man, who had more in common with each other than a world war. You'll discover the extraordinary stories of how both were born to domineering mothers and failed fathers, both did not qualify for the military academy on the first try, both were traumatized by experiences in World War I, both were talented writers, and both lost a child in the very same year (). Remarkably, each man did not warm to the other at first; but as they worked together, their respect for one another grew to become a powerful friendship that lived long after the echoes of war had receded into the past. As allies, they shared a hatred for tyranny and led the world through the greatest war of the twentieth century. As friends, they shared a sense of trust and cooperation that should be raised as a standard. Containing new research and memorable insights, "Eisenhower and Churchill" brings to life the two lions of the twentieth centruy. "Who would not welcome an intimate book about Churchill and Eisenhower, and who is better situated to write itthan Professor Humes, who knew them both, and studiously--and ardently--records their careers and their friendship?" --William F. Buckley Jr. "James C. Humes's "Eisenhower and Churchill" is a wonderful dual biography laced with lively anecdotes, engaging prose, and shrewd analysis. A truly welcome addition to our growing literature on the Second World War." --Douglas Brinkley, professor of history and director of the Eisenhower Center, University of New Orleans

Railroad Stations: The Buildings That Linked the Nation

Railroad Stations: The Buildings That Linked the Nation

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Naylor, David, PUBLISHER: W. W. Norton & Company, Almost overnight railway lines sprawled across the United States, quickly assuming a key role in America s rapid growth and development. Linking these lines that crisscrossed the map were the stations themselves, the very centerpieces physical and metaphorical of civic and cultural life in America. They were backdrops to commonplace comings and goings as well as public lecturers and evangelists, rallies and wartime troop movement; outposts of Western settlement; staging grounds for presidential whistle-stop tours; and destinations for a new class of tourists that arose at the turn of the twentieth century. Reflecting a vast range of shapes, styles, and sizes, their architectural diversity defined them nearly as much as their hallowed place in American history.Organized by region, Railroad Stations: The Buildings That Link the Nation captures all their expressions, from modest to glorious. Here are rugged Western depots, ghost-town stations in the Plains, an art deco masterpiece in Ohio, and grand urban landmarks. Also showcased are related features such as waiting rooms and concourses, some with lavish displays of artwork; elegant details including cornices, cupolas, campaniles, and clock towers; adjacent train sheds and hotels; carriage shops and roadhouses; baggage carts; and much, much more. In over 600 striking archival plans, drawings, maps, and images many from panoramic and aerial perspectives, and taken by such noted photographers as Jack Boucher, Jack Delano, and Jet Lowe the stories of railroad stations big and small are charted, a visual feast of images chronicling the history and stylistic character of one of our nation s most iconic building types.

A Second Wind: The True Story That Inspired the Motion

ISBN: , SKU: , AUTHOR: Pozzo Di Borgo, Philippe, PUBLISHER: Atria Books, "He was unbearable, vain, proud, brutal, inconsistent, human. Without him, I would have rotted to death.... He was my guardian devil." As the descendant of two prominent French families and director of one of the world's most celebrated champagne houses, Philippe Pozzo di Borgo was not someone in the habit of asking for help. Then, in , right on the heels of his wife being diagnosed with a terminal illness, a paragliding accident left him a quadriplegic. Passing his days hidden behind the high walls of his Paris townhouse, Philippe found himself the modern equivalent of an "untouchable"--unable to reach out to others, as others were afraid to reach out to him. The only person who seemed unaffected by Philippe's condition was someone who had been marginalized his entire life--Abdel, the unemployed, uninhibited Algerian immigrant who would become his unlikely caretaker. In between dramas and jokes, he sustained Philippe's life for the next ten years. "A Second Wind, "the basis for the major motion picture "The Intouchables, "is the inspiring true story of two men who refused to ask for help, and then wound up helping each other.
