In it, Tooze advances the thesis that Woodrow Wilson and, to a lesser extent, his successors were attempting to exert a form of global financial hegemony during the latter half of WW1 as the Entente became reliant on American loans. I can't help but feel that the author bit off more than he could chew-even 500 pages isn't enough space to cover global economic and political development over such a tumultuous 15 year time period, and he often makes assertions that he doesn't have enough time or space to fully explore or explain-perhaps he should have focused more on the American-European relationship and left Asia for a follow-on work. Tooze is at his best when discussing socio-political events, but makes some a few military history errors-he refers to the Imperial German Navy as the Kriegsmarine, a name it wouldn't adopt until the coming of the Third Reich, and classifies the Japanese battleship Mutsu as a cruiser-the later is important because of the Mutsu's role as a symbol of national pride as ship partially paid for by the donations of school kids. C'est bien dommage car connaissant ceux-ci separement nous aurions pus avoir un resultat detonnant -(((((Critique En , le guitariste John Scofield rencontre le trio americain MSMW, compose de l?organiste John Medeski, de Chris Wood a la basse, et du batteur et percussionniste Billy Martin (ancien membre des Lounge Lizards), et connu pour pratiquer volontiers le grand ecart entre jazz traditionnel et funk, groove et hip hop. Les new-yorkais et leur nouvel ami enregistrent alors un album (A Go Go) qui devait initialement rester sans lendemain et suite. Mais le plaisir de jouer ensemble ? et le succes ? convainc les musiciens de remettre l?ouvrage sur le metier en , pour un nouvel album (Out Louder), et une prolifique tournee. C?est cette derniere qu?illustrent les douze selections en deux disques ? donc florilege en public des deux opus en studio - de Live In Case..., toutes compositions originales, a l?exception des traditionnels « Tootie Ma is A Big Fine Thing » (lorgnant vers un Bresil tressautant), ainsi que l?emblematique « Amazing Grace », ici recueilli comme il se doit, mais a la liturgie grondante. Les pieces s?averent toutes alimentees d?un jazz funky bien compris, sinon tempere, aborde par la face la plus libre, voire libertaire qui soit on sent bien que les solistes (tres principalement Scofield et Medeski), apres avoir fixe le canevas de themes seminaux, s?autorisent toutes digressions et fantaisies. Les fans de Jimmy Smith ou Herbie Hancock plongeront ainsi avec avidite sur cette celebration harmonique de l?Hammond B3, et sur ce catalogue de morceaux funky en medium, parfois teinte d?une aimable latinite. Et ceux de Miles Davis ne resteront pas insensibles a « Miles Behind », ou les musiciens tentent de retrouver la fievre implacable du Miles electrique, la basse de Wood enracinant alors la musique au sol, et Scofield s?approchant des sonorites de la trompette electrifiee.
