In it, Tooze advances ong>theong> ong>theong>sis that Woodrow Wilson and, to a lesser extent, his successors were attempting to exert a form of global financial hegemony during ong>theong> latter half of WW1 as ong>theong> Entente became reliant on American loans. I can't help but feel that ong>theong> author bit off more than he could chew-even 500 pages isn't enough space to cover global economic and political development over such a tumultuous 15 year time period, and he often makes assertions that he doesn't have enough time or space to fully explore or explain-perhaps he should have focused more on ong>theong> American-European relationship and left Asia for a follow-on work. Tooze is at his best when discussing socio-political events, but makes some a few military history errors-he refers to ong>theong> Imperial German Navy as ong>theong> Kriegsmarine, a name it wouldn't adopt until ong>theong> coming of ong>theong> Third Reich, and classifies ong>theong> Japanese battleship Mutsu as a cruiser-ong>theong> later is important because of ong>theong> Mutsu's role as a symbol of national pride as ship partially paid for by ong>theong> donations of school kids. I still highly recommend reading it. _ *\_ A brilliant book - it has radically changed my understanding of... A brilliant book - it has radically changed my understanding of ong>theong> Great War and ong>theong> peace. He presents a radical reinterpretation of ong>theong> peace, Wilson and Brest Litovsk. Oceanic - opens a whole new world of thinking about ong>theong> problem. Amazing, Can't think of a better book that I have read in years. _ *\_ A searing and highly original analysis of ong>theong> First World War and its anguished aftermath In ong>theong> depths of ong>theong> Great War, with millions dead and no imaginable end to ong>theong> conflict, societies around ong>theong> world began to buckle. ong>Theong> heart of ong>theong> financial system shifted from London to New York. ong>Theong> infinite demands for men and materiel reached into countries far from ong>theong> front. ong>Theong> strain of ong>theong> war ravaged all economic and political assumptions, bringing unheard-of changes in ong>theong> social and industrial order. A century after ong>theong> outbreak of fighting, Adam Tooze revisits this seismic moment in history, challenging ong>theong> existing narrative of ong>theong> war, its peace, and its aftereffects. From ong>theong> day ong>theong> United States enters ong>theong> war in to ong>theong> precipice of global financial ruin, Tooze delineates ong>theong> world remade by American economic and military power. Tracing ong>theong> ways in which countries came to terms with America's centrality?including ong>theong> slide into fascism?ong>Theong> Deluge is a chilling work of great originality that will fundamentally change how we view ong>theong> legacy of World War I. Adam Tooze is Barton M. Biggs Professor of History and Co-Director of International Security Studies at Yale University.
