Hamadaan is a city situated in the western part of Persia, 300 kilometres west of Teheraan. It is one of the worlds oldest cities and is mentioned under the name of Ekbataana in the Bible, see the book of Esther. The city is a center for trading with carpets that are manufactured in the hundreds from nearby villages and cities. The best of these carpets are sold under their own names such asNahavaand, Tuiserkaan, Malaayer or Hosseinabaad. More simple carpets from the area are sold under the generic term Hamadan. They are easily recognized with their typical patterns and sizes.  The patterns are very varying and the medallion as well as carpets with repeated patterns occur. Among individual pattens the Herati is the most common pattern. The colors are dominated by different nuances of indigo blue and madder red. Older Hamadaan carpets can be very attractive products. In the city itself, Hamadaan, carpets were manufactured with a considerably higher quality.The carpets were called Shaah r-baaff and are similiar in structure to the Bidjaar carpets, but they are rare on the market today. The carpets are manufactured with a ropy, shiny and often natural dyed hand-spun yarn, that provides a very durable surface and beautiful colour scale. Common for all these carpets is that they are nowadays made on a cotton warp with one weft.  The patterns are mostly geometrical, but floral motifs also occur. The city of Sultanabaad (now known as Arak) was founded in to become the major center of rug production in Persia. Sultanabad carpets are distinguished as the highest quality of Mahal productions manufactured in the Arak region. Other types of Sultanabad designs may include production from Mushkabaad. Ferahaans and Surouuks were also made in the Arak region, though are wholly different. Beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century, a large increase in demand for Persian rugs by Western consumers transformed a millennia old art form. During the late 19th century, in , the Manchester, England, based Anglo-Swiss firm of Ziegler & Co. established a manufactory, the sole objective of which was to produce Sultanabad rugs to meet western tastes and demands. Western designers modified classical Persian designs, marking the first time westerners directly affected Persian designs (beyond influence through market demand). In step with the beginning of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Ziegler modified designs to be larger size, along with a larger rug size to suit western room specifications. Arak's palette changed, as colors were softened in an effort to appeal to housewives of Europe and America. Most similar to the Sultanabads are Heeriiz and Seeraapi rugs; this similarity being attributed to the magnificent graphic character of the designs. Yet within this similarity, the line work of the Heeriiz/Seerapiis is always more curvilinear and classical. Sultanabads share with Persian rugs all-over designs of palmettes and vinescrolls, but as they use a larger, suppler weave, the Sultanabad designs tend to be larger as well. The most popular color of the Sultanabad repertoire was a deep rose red. Baluch rugs are hand knotted rugs that are woven in the wider area of Baluchistan, which covers the South Eastern Province of Baluchistan of Iran, South west of Afghanistan, and East of Pakistan, near the Borders of the three countries. Baluchi rugs are tribal by nature and are initially made to be used inside tribal tents, which are often mobile and move from one place to another. Therefore as a matter of practicality they are produced in smaller sizes, the most common of them around 3x4', 4x6' and they are usually limited to less than 8 feet in length. Pile rugs in general are made from a mix of wool and cotton, in which cotton is used as the base of the rugs and wool form the pile. In Baluch rugs, unlike most other types of rugs, even the foundation of the rug is made of wool. The wool used in Baluchi rugs are normally hand spun and, until very recently, Baluch rugs have been using natural and vegetable dyes. These rugs are known for their resilience. However, due to the type of materials used and the circumstances the knot density in Baluchi rugs are lower than most hand knotted rugs. The rug has traditional Engsi design with cross in the middle. The rug made in bright red colors with some beige, orange and blue accents. The condition is fair for the age, original. There no stains or holes on the rug. An engsi (also referred to as ensi or hatchlu) is the name of a small rug that was originally used as door of the turkmen tent, the yurt. It seems a large proportion of the engsis on the market have never seen use as door cover. Even in the 19th century, many were made by the women of nomadic or sedentary Turkmen tribes as valuable tradeable items. The engsi has the typical quartered design: the field is divided into four panels by a vertical bar panel overlapped by a central horizontal bar. The vertical central bar panel leads to a single arch with a slanted roof at the top end. While the arch has obvious similarities to the mirhab in prayer rugs, opinion seems to converge that engsis were not used for prayer. This engsi is typical for the production at the end of the 19th century, though small individual details (such as the use of goat hair in the warps and the charming miniaturisation of the geometric border elements at one point in the right border) indicate that this rug is not the result of some organised manufacturing process. The arrays of the candlebra device in the four field panels can provide a clue as to the age. Earlier pieces like this one have an unequal number of candelabras in adjacent rows, with the candlebras staggered vertically rather than arrayed neatly in columns.
