The scribes of ancient Israel are indeed the main figures behind the Hebrew Bible, and in this book Karel van der Toorn tells their story for the first time. His book considers the Bible in very specific historical terms, as the output of the scribal workshop of the Second Temple active in the period BCE. Drawing comparisons with the scribal practices of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, van der Toorn clearly details the methods, the assumptions, and the material means of production that gave rise to biblical texts; then he brings his observations to bear on two important texts, Deuteronomy and Jeremiah. Traditionally seen as the copycats of antiquity, the scribes emerge here as the literate elite who held the key to the production as well as the transmission of texts. Van der Toorn's account of scribal culture opens a new perspective on the origins of the Hebrew Bible, revealing how the individual books of the Bible and the authors associated with them were products of the social and intellectual world of the scribes. The Great War and the Remaking of Global Order The Deluge The Great War and the Remaking of Global Order As I was a big fan of Tooze's The Wages of Destruction, I was really looking forward to this book. In it, Tooze advances the thesis that Woodrow Wilson and, to a lesser extent, his successors were attempting to exert a form of global financial hegemony during the latter half of WW1 as the Entente became reliant on American loans. I can't help but feel that the author bit off more than he could chew-even 500 pages isn't enough space to cover global economic and political development over such a tumultuous 15 year time period, and he often makes assertions that he doesn't have enough time or space to fully explore or explain-perhaps he should have focused more on the American-European relationship and left Asia for a follow-on work. Tooze is at his best when discussing socio-political events, but makes some a few military history errors-he refers to the Imperial German Navy as the Kriegsmarine, a name it wouldn't adopt until the coming of the Third Reich, and classifies the Japanese battleship Mutsu as a cruiser-the later is important because of the Mutsu's role as a symbol of national pride as ship partially paid for by the donations of school kids.
