A very unusual hat for the period, pillbox in shape and size. Made by 'Jane Belavel, 26 Rue St Antoine du T, Toulouse, France'. Very fine black silk ribbon work rosettes surround the brim, black silk chiffon is also used in suaves around the crown. A black hat pin of the period sits to the back (included in sale). A very long fine veil (perfect) is thrown over the whole hat, this was used during mourning. The hat is all hand sewn and is beautifully crafted. This is a very rare collectors piece or museum piece. They did this by making wonderful and glamorous hats from whatever material scraps they had available and they were talented! This rare example, is made from black felt, wide silk ribbon bows around the crown and a matching ribbon turban snood. The crown of the hat has a beautifully moulded chimney style. All hand sewn in buttery soft black felt with an undulating edged wide brim and a shallow crown. Grosgrain ribbon surrounds the crown and sits to the front in a wide upright bow across the entire front. Small velvet florals with little droplets are the only adornment. The original hat pin is still at the back of the hat and is included in the sale. This is a very rare survivor, over 100 years old and still in such beautiful wearable condition. This lovely hat has something of the 'Mary Poppins' in its adorable styling. In excellent true vintage condition, pristine clean and totally wearable. Here is something rare and special. A beautifully made early s tilt hat, and being made of pure silk this is a very rare survivor. Made in fine blue and white check silk with a tall crown and drop brim. An incredible red rose made completely of feathers sits to the front (see close up image). The shaping is beautiful and the look very feminine. The hat is wearable but the silk is fragile and care would be needed. There are signs of age as you would expect with a hat of this kind but overall it is lovely and wears and displays to great effect.
